Synthetic wastewater (SW) medium was used to test the effect of a selective inhibitor and a nitrogen supplement on the CH4 production and its role in the anaerobic degradation of biomass (starch-based). The inhibitor concentration of 0.8 mmol/L ferrous sulfate had no effect on the degradation of the starch-based biomass in SW medium. The supplementation of 0.05 mmol/L ammonium could promote the growth of methanogens, increase the CH4 content, and result in an approximate 13% of the total CH4 production. This result showed that the nitrogen source was the most critical in the anaerobic degradation of biomass. The highest CH4 yield and content were obtained when the biomass was pretreated in SW medium without inoculum in the presence of ammonium-based nitrogen sources at 29.20 ± 0.75 mL
